Medium size cut and polished Orthocera fossils on a rich black and red natural colored wood burned reclaimed cedar wood base.

What are Orthoceras fossils?

Orthoceras are a cephalopod that thrived during the Devonian period. That is roughly 350 million years ago! Until this particular group became extinct approximately 190 million years ago, during the last mass extinction of the dinosaurs. During the Devonian area, now day Morocco, was a shallow sea where these straight siphuncle shelled creatures thrived.

About the building process 

These Orthoceras Fossils originated from the mountains of Morocco. Then masterly sculptured carved & polished by one of our local Rocky Mountain area suppliers. Then the hand crafted, designed, and finial assembly of the Reclaimed Cedar Wood Base of each set happens right here in the Milled Artistry's Workshop. 

These carved fossilized Stone Bookends on Reclaimed Wood Bases are unique and interesting. bound to spark the curiosity. Every time you look, a new detail you hadn't noticed seems to catch your eye. Each peice is cut from the same piece of Black slate with similar size petrified Orthoceras fossils with other fossil remnants present. All sides are polished except for the bottom. 

The Reclaimed Wood the base is crafted from is a real honor for me to have my hands on again. Originally from a deck my Dad built in the 80s tucked inside a large forest garden, a fairy would have been proud to call home. As the trees grew bigger and around the deck it always reminded me of reading the Secret Garden. I would imagin as I walked across the little arched bridge I was entering into my own fairy filled Secret Garden.

Then the little rubber feet help keep the bookend from sliding. This is a little peice of my childhood history special just for you.  A beautiful addition to your bookshelf.

The tops and sides of each fossil has been nicely cut and polished to bring the unique details of the Orthoceras to view, while the in-between sections is a rough cut, allowing for an interesting take on how a fossil may look in different settings.
